Despite what you may think, celebrity children don’t always have it easy. Yes, they may have access to large quantities of money and entry into some of the world’s most exclusive places simply because of their connections, but they also have a legacy to live up to.
Can they compete with their parent’s career? Or will they simply crash out and burn in a rehabilitation center after indulging in a lavish lifestyle?! For Cordell Broadus, these questions have plagued him since his birth in 1997. As the son of rap icon Snoop Dogg, he had a lot to live up to. Having sold 35 million records worldwide since he was discovered by Dr.Dre in 1992, the 46-year-old musician is a bona fide star. But Snoop Dogg, who temporarily changed his name to Snoop Lion in 2012, is not only a star within the music industry. The California-born rapper is also an actor, director, music producer, philanthropist and fashion icon – notorious for his penchant for fur coats. His fame has seen fans overlook his questionable criminal past, which includes convictions for drug possession, preparing drugs for sale, possession of a firearm, assault, vandalization (which resulted in him being banned from entering the UK for four years). All this was in addition to high profile case in 1993, in which Snoop Dogg and an accomplice were accused of murdering a rival gang member. The pair were defended by Johnnie Cochran – the same attorney that successfully defended OJ Simpson a year later – who managed to get them off of the charges. Furthermore, Snoop, who was a member of the notorious Rollin’ 20 Crips gang, famously told Rolling Stone how he was a professional pimp between 2003 and 2004, before giving up the work to spend more time with his family. This colorful history makes Snoop Dogg a larger than life character. But his young son is catching up with him quickly! Cordell Broadus, who is often nicknamed Lil’ Snoop, is Snoop’s second son with his childhood sweetheart, Shante Taylor, who he has been married to since 1997 – minus a divorce which lasted for four years before they reconciled. Broadus, who sports a relatively clean-cut image in comparison to his father, studied at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas before moving on to the University of California to pursue his bachelor’s degree after graduation. Whilst there, he was a star athlete and received a scholarship to the college’s football team. Although a glimmer of his father’s spirit was seen in 2013 when Broadus punched a rival player in 2013, which resulted in his suspension. Despite being pegged as an up-and-coming star of the sport, Broadus quit football after realizing that it didn’t align with his career aspirations.
In 2016, he quit the football team after revealing that he only played the sport to gain his father’s affection. “I played football for my father because I thought that was the only way he would love me [and] be a part of my life,” he announced via Instagram, where he has over half a million followers. “It took me 12 years to realize he loves Cordell Broadus the person, not Cordell Broadus the football player.” With his good looks and father behind him, Broadus was able to slip into the entertainment industry where he has appeared in his father’s reality show. The handsome youngster has also scored work modeling for fashion houses such as MCM Worldwide and Philipp Plein. As his fame continues to rise, there is no doubt that we shall be seeing a lot more of Cordell Broadus in the future. But in the meantime, he is stirring up a storm online as people flock to find out more about the rising star. A promising career is certainly ahead, but will he ever be able to compete with his father? Watch this space to find out.
