Barring his epic introduction in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, we’re all too hyped for the king of Wakanda to make his official cinematic debut in Black Pantheron Feb. 16. The MCU adaptation of a young man who must learn how to lead his country and prevent global disaster sounds so incredibly exciting, that we can’t wait for the premiere. Obviously, we aren’t the only ones.
When pre-ticket sales dropped on Fandango on January 9, the upcoming film almost immediately broke Marvel records when it sold more advanced tickets than any other movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beating out the aforementioned Civil War. Even Lupita Nyong’o, one of the stars of the film, couldn’t get her hands on tickets for opening night.
And though Avengers: Infinity War is coming out later this year, Black Panther already looks like it’s going to be one of Marvel’s biggest movies to date, and for plenty of reasons other than selling all these tickets for opening weekend.
Black Panther marks the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature a black main protagonist supplemented by an almost-entirely black cast. The movie comes during a time when shows like Marvel’s Netflix exclusive Luke Cage portrayed the seedy and dangerous gang warfare of Harlem, while the CW’s Black Lightning blends a traditional sci-fi comic book adaptation with realistic depictions of people within marginalized communities. Black Panther stands among these shows as an important step in black representation within entertainment. As a mainstream Hollywood adaptation, it takes that to a whole new level.
Just in case people don’t already know how excited you are for Black Panther, show it off with some awesome swag. There’s plenty of movie merch popping up so you can make your statement while you wait to see T’Challa and the Dora Milaje grace the big screen.
