Adorable soccer ball droid BB-8 may have been a mere twinkle in his inventor’s eye when Jyn Erso and company were stealing the plans to the first Death Star. But that doesn’t mean he can’t follow along with her exploits on screen.
The bestselling app-controlled version of BB-8 made by Sphero has just been reprogrammed with full knowledge of Rogue One, just in time for the movie’s release on Blu-Ray and DVD.
As of Tuesday, you can watch the movie with the droid; he’ll bleep and bob his head at key scenes and recognize major characters.
The update is similar to the one introduced last year that lets you watch The Force Awakens alongside BB-8. Via the iOS or Android app, the droid picks up the audio of the movie and knows exactly which scene you’re in, no matter how many times you stop, start or skip around.
Recognized characters pop up on the app screen, while the droid shares his excitement in a manner that would earn him an angry “shush” or two inside a movie theater.
Perhaps inevitably, BB-8 was a little less excited by Rogue One than by the movie in which he stars. We were expecting a more animated response to the highly memorable Darth Vader scene towards the end of the film, and at least a nod of recognition to the legend who shows up at the very end.
Then again, perhaps he was too bummed out by the heroic deaths that preceded that point and that all his enthusiastic nodding during the battle of Scarif hadn’t helped save his favorite humans and his fellow droid.
Cheer up, BB-8. Spoiler alert: the good guys always win in the long run.
